Chunav Flashback: In 1996 and 1998, Congress stronghold Rae Bareli was defeated by BJP’s Ashok Singh

Chunav Flashback: The Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh has always been a Congress bastion. Congress matriarch Sonia Gandhi has served as the parliamentary constituency’s representative for over 20 years, having started in 2006.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is hoping to win this important seat during the country’s ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Even though the BJP seeks to unseat the Congress party in its stronghold, the saffron camp has previously won Rae Bareli.

In Rae Bareli, Ashok Singh of the BJP declared victory in the Lok Sabha elections in 1996 and 1998. In 1996, Ashok Singh beat Ashok Singh of the Janata Dal and Babulal Lodhi of the BSP. In 1998, he defeated Surendra Bahadur Singh of the Samajwadi Party.

Ashok Singh’s path to politics
1987: Rae Bareli, Amawa, and Block Pramukh
1989–1992: Two terms as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly
Entered the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996.
Member of the Committee on Urban and Rural Development, 1996–1998
1998: Elected a second time to the 12th Lok Sabha
1998–1999: Chairman of the District Co-operative Bank Ltd. since 1994; member of the Committee on Human Resource Development and its Subcommittee on Drug Control; member of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Consultative Committee.
But in Rae Bareli, the saffron party has failed to gain traction after 1998. No other party, except the Congress, BJP, and Janata Party, has ever declared victory in Raebareli.

Given that many prominent Congressmen, such as Feroze Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi, have run for office from this seat, it is one of the most important in Uttar Pradesh.

Currently serving as the Raebareli MP, Sonia Gandhi has moved to the Rajya Sabha. BJP officials are certain they can win Rae Bareli because Sonia Gandhi isn’t running this time.

The Congress and BJP are directly competing in Rae Bareli, although no party has yet to name a candidate. There are 80 Lok Sabha seats available to Uttar Pradesh. In the state, all seven stages of voting are being conducted.

On May 20, Rae Bareli will have its fifth round of voting.
