As the Women’s Team Shines in the Second Season of the WPL, IPL Fans Make Fun of Virat Kohli’s RCB

“A medal is a medal, and a chhora is a chhori.” As Smriti Mandhana and her team won the IPL Trophy, something that RCB supporters had been waiting for for more than 16 years, Aamir Khan’s remarks echoed across the cricket world! After all, the women’s squad of Royal Challengers Bangalore produced an incredible triumph in only their second season of the WPL, despite the franchise’s ongoing IPL drought. Talk about the strength of women – RCB supporters were left speechless, unable to get over the shock of seeing these female athletes achieve what the men had long expected of them.

This triumph provoked a barrage of clever memes and jokes directed at the RCB men’s team and its star player, Virat Kohli. Even though the jokes were lighthearted and never meant to diminish women’s talents, the males were made fun of for their win’s sheer unpredictable nature, implying that they should learn a few lessons from these goddesses.

Ellyse Perry, an all-round player, led the way for RCB as they secured the goal of 114 runs off 37 balls with three balls remaining. The outstanding performance of their spin quartet—Sophie Molineux, Shreyanka Patil, Asha Sobhana, and Georgia Wareham—who together grabbed nine of the ten wickets, leaving DC unable to muster any momentum, was a key factor in their pursuit of a low target on Sunday.

On the other hand, even though Kohli has been a constant for RCB in every IPL season since the league’s founding in 2008 and the team has advanced to three finals—in 2009, 2011, and 2016—the coveted trophy has yet to come his way. Thus, when the women’s side triumphed against DC by eight wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Kohli kindly thanked Mandhana and her squad during a video chat. Later, RCB raised the Women’s Premier League (WPL) trophy.

Following his video chat with the captain of the RCB, Kohli also posted a remarkable homage to Bangalore’s “superwomen” on Instagram.

Along with replies from other RCB superstars like Glenn Maxwell and cricket great Chris Gayle, who were equally full of admiration for the women’s side of the Bangalore-based team, Kohli’s tweet and conversation rapidly became social media sensations.
