After hearing from several individuals that her looks suggest a mentality that may help her future husband become successful and affluent, a 29-year-old Chinese lady has gone viral online. Recently, videos of the lady at a dining table have gone popular on social media in mainland China. Many people have commented that she has “a face that brings good luck to her husband,” or Wang Fu Xiang.

The video was posted on the 29-year-old woman’s Douyin account, @Huaxianpengyuyan, in January. She is from the central Chinese province of Henan. The belief that certain facial traits in women might bring good fortune has its roots in Chinese feudalism. Even though the idea of a “lucky face” is now often dismissed as mere superstition, some people nevertheless hold onto it. More than 800,000 people have seen the hashtag #wangfuxiang on the social networking platform Xiaohongshu.

The most attractive characteristics are a wide face with a broad forehead and round chin, which is said to suggest that the lady is kind and capable of assisting her partner in forming bonds.

A fortunate face is primarily defined by its nose, which has a propensity for having a round tip and a long, straight bridge. The fact that the lower lip is somewhat thicker than the upper—a characteristic said to “hold the good fortune”—is another important consideration. Chinese face readers also believe that having brilliant eyes and silky hair is essential for a fortunate face.

Wang Fu Xiang is often cited as exemplified by Guo Jingjing, a well-known Chinese springboard diver and four-time Olympic gold medalist who wed Kenneth Fok Kai-kong, the grandson of Hong Kong business mogul Henry Fok Ying-tung, in 2012. The lady in the video garnered a lot of praise on the internet, with many people saying that they had never seen such a classic lucky expression. A guy on Douyin said, “What an ideal image for a woman.”

“I’m already imagining spending the rest of my life with her,” said someone else. The younger generation in China has grown to embrace internet dating as a means of finding a lasting partner, and matchmakers consider having a fortunate face to be a benefit. However, there is no concrete evidence linking a fortunate face to a greater bride price—a sum of money that men customarily give to the woman’s family in China as part of the engagement ceremony.
