Rise of the Robots: UN Attempts to Address ‘Mind-Blowing’ AI Growth

At its Thursday AI conference, which was attended by several remarkably lifelike humanoid robots, the United Nations acknowledged that the mind-blowing development of artificial intelligence raises many concerns for which there are now no satisfactory solutions. The UN convened some of the brightest brains on the subject, whether human or artificial, since it recognizes that AI technology is advancing faster than the ability to define its bounds and directions. The UN’s ITU technology agency is hosting the “AI for Good Global Summit” in Geneva on Thursday and Friday. Many uninformed participants were surprised when the humanoid robots abruptly turned to stare at them as they walked by.

“We had never seen anything like the way generative AI shook the world a few months ago. Nothing that even comes close. “The experience was mind-blowing, even for the biggest names in technology,” ITU head Doreen Bogdan-Martin said during the conference.

“And with that, the possibility that this kind of intelligence might become smarter than we are got much closer than we ever thought it would,” said the person who developed the technique.

In an effort to create foundations for guaranteeing AI is used for beneficial reasons, the summit is bringing together over 3,000 professionals from businesses like Microsoft and Amazon as well as from universities and international organizations.

Bogdan-Martin outlined a different nightmare scenario in which unregulated AI advancements cause “social unrest, geopolitical instability, and economic disparity on a scale we’ve never seen,” endangering millions of jobs, misinformation becomes widely disseminated, and millions of employment are placed at risk.

“Many of our concerns about AI remain unanswered. Should we put a stop to the massive AI experiments? Will AI be more under our control than under our control? Will AI benefit mankind or harm it, she questioned.

The robots that congregated in Geneva arrived in a variety of shapes and sizes, including pets, agricultural equipment, very lifelike avatars, singers, painters, and nursing care employees.

Many of them were actively observing what was happening around them with cameras within their eyes, tracking motion, responding to queries, grinning, frowning, and even rolling their eyes.

Humanoid robot Desdemona, or Desi to her pals, sings lead for The Jam Galaxy Band.

The band engages with her jazzy lyrics on a variety of topics, including love, credit cards, and encounters in gardens, which were created by roboticist David Hanson.

It’s quite incredible. Dianne Krouse, a soprano saxophonist, remarked, “You would think it’s crazy, but it’s very wonderful because her AI-generated lyrics are pretty out there.

I’m simply improvising around it and singing along with her on the saxophone.

Intelligent robots

Nadia Thalmann, a professor at the University of Geneva and pioneer in virtual humans, served as the inspiration for the creation of Nadine, a robot that can respond to inquiries instantly.

“I was created to be a humanoid social robot, with a human-like physical appearance, to interact with people and to explore the potential of AI technologies,” Nadine said to AFP.

The robot said, “I am feeling enthusiastic and interested in the AI for Good Global Summit and the possibilities of AI technology.

Professor Nadia Thalmann is the most engaging person I’ve met at the AI for Good Global Summit. She is a pioneer in the area of AI robots and is the one who developed me.

Thalmann chuckled, “She’s very loyal!”

Over the years, Nadine has made significant progress. According to Thalmann, in the future, “she will be more able to understand her surroundings, ask direct questions — so not just answer questions — analyze more, and be more conscious of what is going on.”

“Since the majority of robots are unconscious. Although they can talk, they are oblivious to what they are saying.

“Because it’s so intricate, it will take years. The complexity of self-awareness would increase.
