The UP village of Jamaipura is home to men who live with their in-laws

There is a strange hamlet called Jamaipura in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. It is well-known for its unusual custom of sons-in-law living with their in-laws after marriage. The son-in-law, known as “Jamai,” is required by old custom to move into his wife’s parents’ house after marriage.

The town of Jamaipura, which is part of Khekra city in Baghpat, was founded 37 years ago when four families moved here after marrying daughters from Khekra town. Originally called “Jamai Pur,” the colony eventually acquired the name “Jamaipura” as the locals began referring to its residents as “Jamais.” The colony prospered throughout time and can presently house around 500 families.

The colony has evolved, but it has not lost its historical relevance, continuing the long-standing custom of son-in-laws living with their in-laws. The current councillor, Liaquat Ansari, reaffirmed the colony’s founding in 1987 and pointed out the custom of boys marrying girls from Jamaipura households and then living with their in-laws. The colony’s name was eventually changed to Prempuri, but “Jamaipura” is still widely used in the area, a testament to its rich cultural heritage.
