The leading automaker in South Korea, Hyundai Motor, and its subsidiary, Kia, said on Sunday that they had signed a deal with China’s Baidu to collaborate on the development of connected automobile technology.

The two South Korean automakers and Baidu have inked a memorandum of understanding in Beijing last week, whereby they would collaborate on a number of projects, including self-driving technology and networking.

According to Yonhap news agency, Hyundai and Kia will also make use of Baidu’s intelligent cloud computing technologies to comply with Beijing’s tightening data laws.

According to them, the South Korean businesses will work with their Chinese counterparts to develop innovative business strategies that make use of artificial intelligence technology.

In a news statement, Hyundai and Kia said, “We will work to establish the ecosystem for connected cars in the Chinese market through the strategic collaboration with Baidu.”

The arrangement was reached in the midst of China’s expanding connected vehicle sector.

According to Hyundai, which cited Chinese statistics, the number of connected vehicles sold in China is expected to exceed 17 million units this year, a significant increase from the 7.2 million units recorded in 2019.

Since 2014, Hyundai and Kia have collaborated extensively with Baidu on many projects, including the advancement of speech recognition technology.
