Prices for gasoline and diesel on January 3: The price of crude oil on the global market is showing a mixed trend. Right now, a liter of petrol costs Rs 96.72 in Delhi, while a liter of diesel costs Rs 89.62. In contrast, a liter of diesel costs Rs 94.27 and a liter of petrol costs Rs 106.31 in Mumbai. In Kolkata, a liter of petrol costs Rs 106.03, while a liter of diesel costs Rs 92.76. However, in Chennai, a liter of diesel is sold for Rs 94.24, and a gallon of petrol for Rs 102.63.

The pricing of gasoline and diesel in India is set by oil marketing companies (OMCs) such as Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum. This is done every day, and rates are set based on the global price of crude oil.

Why do gas prices differ across states?

Every day at six in the morning, the rates are released, whether they are new or not. However, they differ from one state to the next because of factors like local taxes, freight costs, value-added tax (VAT), etc.
