The Godrej family broke up: cousin Jamshyd got unlisted companies and a land bank, while brother Adi kept listed enterprises

The Godrej family revealed their separation on Tuesday, referring to it as “an ownership realignment” of their stock in the Godrej businesses. According to the Mumbai-based company, the realignment was reached in a considerate and courteous manner to preserve peace and better align ownership in recognition of the many views held by the Godrej family members.

According to a statement released by the organization, the group is divided between two branches of the founding family: Adi Godrej (82) and his brother Nadir (73) on one side and his cousins Jamshyd Godrej (75) and Smita Godrej Crishna (74), on the other.

“This will help maximise strategic direction, focus, and agility and will accelerate the process of creating long-term value for shareholders and all other stakeholders,” according to a statement released by the legacy family.

Following the acquisition of the necessary regulatory clearances, the realignment will take effect.

The Godrej & Boyce (G&B) and its affiliates, which operate in a variety of industries including aerospace, aviation, defense, IT, software, and infrastructure solutions, make up Godrej Enterprises Group (GEG). Jamshyd Godrej, the company’s chairperson and managing director, as well as their immediate families will now be in charge of GEG. Nyrika Holkar, the daughter of his sister Smita, will serve as the executive director.

This arm, which will also contain the land bank and 3,400 acres of prime Mumbai property, would be run by their families.

Nadir Godrej will serve as the chairman of the Godrej Industries Group (GIG), which is governed by Adi, Nadir, and their immediate families. GIG comprises the listed firms Godrej Industries, Godrej Consumer Products, Godrej Properties, Godrej Agrovet, and Astec Lifesciences.

In August 2026, Adi’s son Pirojsha Godrej will take over as GIG’s Executive Vice Chair, succeeding Nadir Godrej in that role.

The Godrej brand will be used by both organizations going forward.

Speaking about the prospects for the future, Jamshyd Godrej said, “Godrej & Boyce has always been motivated by the strong goal of nation-building since its founding in 1897. We can now more easily pursue our growth goals and concentrate on using our core competencies in high-tech engineering and design-led innovation across our robust portfolio of strategic, consumer, and emerging companies, thanks to the implementation of this forward-looking family agreement.”

“Godrej was founded in 1897 to help build economic independence for India,” Nadir Godrej said. Our core values of trust, respect, trusteeship, and improving the communities in which our firms operate, together with our profound mission of innovation for a cause, are fundamental to who we are even after 125 years. We’re excited to continue this history with agility and concentration.”
