About Sikh Representation in Bollywood, Diljit Dosanjh said, “They Didn’t Show…”

Diljit Dosanjh is undoubtedly the man of the moment, from his performance as the lead in Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila to Ed Sheeran’s concert in Mumbai. The Punjab-born singer-actor, who is Sikh by heritage, recently discussed in an interview how Bollywood has failed to “properly” portray his tribe in movies.

“I have to admit that I don’t care about clothing or swag. The Bollywood movies that were released at the time, when we were in Punjab, did not accurately portray Sikhs. I thus made the decision that I would outdress any Bollywood stylist when I worked on Bollywood movies. “I’m aware of fashion,” Diljit Dosanjh said in a conversation.

Diljit elaborated on the inaccurate portrayal of Punjabi fashion in Bollywood, stating, “There is a connection between New York and Punjab, so fashion trends there will inevitably find their way to Punjab.” I thus always believed that I would prove to them that their portrayals of individuals are inaccurate when I visited Bollywood. This is not who we are.

To those who are unaware, Diljit Dosanjh will soon be featured in Amar Singh Chamkila, directed by Imtiaz Ali, which will be available to watch on Netflix starting on April 12.
