Chand Burke: who is he? grandmother of Ranveer Singh and a Bollywood actress

The charismatic actor Ranveer Singh has a fascinating family history that few people are aware of. You may not know this, but a prominent member of his family was active in the Indian film industry. Meet Chand Burke, who had an enduring impact on Bollywood in the 1940s and is Ranveer Singh’s paternal grandmother.

Chand Burke was the youngest of her twelve siblings and was born into a Christian household in Pakistan. She showed extraordinary skill in academics, dancing, and even acting from an early age. Chand began her career as a young artist in the thriving Lahore film business. She quickly gained notoriety and was dubbed “the Dancing Lily of Punjab” in the Punjabi cinema community.

Chand Burke’s voyage, however, was changed by the partition of India, which forced her to go to Mumbai, which was then called Bombay. Despite the difficulties she had as a result of the turmoil, Chand’s tenacity and love for performing never wavered. She made her acting debut in Bollywood in the 1954 highly praised movie “Boot Polish” under the direction of iconic actor Raj Kapoor.

In the movie “Boot Polish,” Chand Burke played a vengeful aunt who harassed her orphaned niece and nephew, played by Baby Naaz and Rattan Kumar. Both the compelling plot of the movie and the cast’s outstanding performances won high accolades. A testimony to the movie’s influence on the world stage is the fact that Baby Naaz received a special mention at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival.

Chand Burke’s personal life saw ups and downs in addition to her acting profession. Niranjan, a screenwriter, was her first husband, but they divorced in 1954. She then fell in love once again and wed businessman Sundar Singh Bhavani. They have two children together, Tonya and Jagjit, who happens to be the father of Ranveer Singh.
