Trump fails to have the hush money trial postponed until the US Supreme Court reviews it

Donald Trump attempted to postpone his trial on accusations of paying hush money to a porn actress until the U.S. Supreme Court considered his claim to presidential immunity in a different criminal case, but a New York court rejected his request on Wednesday. The trial was scheduled for April 15.

The former US President’s claims that he is exempt from federal punishment for attempting to reverse his loss to Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2020 election are set to be heard by the Court on April 25.
In the New York case, Trump’s defence attorneys requested in March that Judge Juan Merchan postpone the trial until the completion of the review. They said this was necessary since the prosecution was attempting to use remarks Trump made during his presidency, which ran from 2017 to 2021, as evidence.

Merchan said that Trump had delayed bringing up the matter for too long in a court decision on Wednesday.
“Defendant had myriad opportunities to raise the claim of presidential immunity well before March 7, 2024,” said Merchan.
Trump’s attorney, Todd Blanche, remained silent.
In each of the four criminal charges that he is facing, Trump, the Republican nominee to run against Biden on November 5th, has entered a not guilty plea.
It’s possible that just the New York case will go to trial before the election.
In order to conceal his former attorney Michael Cohen’s $130,000 payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels for her silence before the 2016 election over an alleged 2006 sexual encounter with Trump, he is accused of fabricating company papers.
Daniels, whose actual name is Stephanie Clifford, denies that Trump ever had an interaction with her.
In addition, Trump is requesting a postponement, arguing that excessive media attention to the case has convinced prospective juries that he is already guilty. Merchan hasn’t made a decision on that request yet.
In a court document made public on Wednesday, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office prosecutors, who prosecuted Trump in 2023, objected to that motion.
They said that the majority of the press attention had been caused by Trump and that the jury selection procedure would allow them to exclude any biassed jurors.
Trump won a significant victory when the Supreme Court decided to hear his appeal in the federal election meddling case, postponing the start of the trial by at least many months.
In addition, he is being sued by the state of Georgia for his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election and by the federal government of Florida for his handling of private government records after he left office in 2021. Those cases also don’t have scheduled trials.
There has never been a criminal prosecution of a US president.
