Russia’s governor of Murmansk was stabbed in the stomach, leaving him in critical condition

Andrei Chibis, the governor of the Russian province of Murmansk, is in “serious condition” after a stabbing to the stomach on Thursday during a meeting in the town of Apatity.

According to Yuri Shiryaev, head physician of the Apatity-Kirov Hospital, Chibis, 45, is critically ill and undergoing surgery in the intensive care unit. This information was cited by the Xinhua news agency on Friday.

The perpetrator, named as Alexander Bydanov, was immediately taken into custody by security personnel.

The governor’s spokeswoman said that the incident was unexpected and that the attacker did not yell any slogans or make any requests. An officer of the Russian National Guard (Rosgvardiya) swiftly captured him.

The reasons and motivations are being looked at.
