1,025 CBI cases are still outstanding, according to statistics

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) disclosed in its annual report for 2022–2023 that a total of 1,025 cases, comprising 943 FIRs and 82 Preliminary Enquiries (PE), are pending with the Central Bureau of Investigation since durations ranging from three months to more than one year.

By year’s end, 23 Lokpal referrals remained unresolved in addition to the 1,025 cases. Of the 943 standard instances, 447 were still being looked at after more than a year had passed. In a similar vein, the report said that 60 of the 82 preliminary inquiries were still being investigated after more than three months.

According to the study, at the end of the year, 10,732 instances in which the investigation was finished were still undergoing trial in different courts.

It was also noted by the DoPT in their report that 557 CBI cases had court orders issued in 2022. “Of these, 364 cases were found guilty, 111 were found not guilty, 13 were found not guilty, and 69 cases were dismissed for various reasons. It said that the conviction rate was 74.59%.

In addition to its own data, the CBI records criminal cases based on referrals from state and federal agencies, constitutional courts, government agencies, and statutory bodies like the Central Vigilance Commission. But the CBI is not an emergency response team, and its funding is constrained. According to authorities, great effort is taken to guarantee that only meritorious instances are recorded.

In 2022, the CBI recorded 946 cases. Thirty cases were taken up on the petitions of the states and Union Territories, while 107 cases were taken up on the orders of the constitutional courts. Lokpal provided 28 references, according to the DoPT annual report.
