A Delhi police officer perishes in an accident near the Pragati tunnel

NEW DELHI: On Saturday night, a sub-inspector of the Delhi Police died after colliding with a median barrier in the Pragati Maidan tunnel.

The police are examining the CCTV video to determine the reason. When the accident happened, a car was seen close to the SI’s scooter.

N.K. Pavitharan, the SI, was assigned to the crime squad of the East Delhi district. His scooter lost balance while he was traveling through the tunnel between India Gate to IP Extension, causing him to fall into the pavement.

Sources said that the accident occurred at around 10.30 p.m. when Pavitharan was turning left in the tunnel after the Y-junction that divides the roads that connect to Akshardham Road and Vikas Marg.

He was traveling close to the tunnel’s walls in the right-most channel. Then, he was thrown off his scooter and into the road after a fast collision with a median barrier.

When emergency personnel and police arrived on the scene, they discovered that the man was critically injured. Tunnel marshals also hurried to the scene and made an attempt to save him.

Marshal Sharafat stated: “I was here when the disaster happened. When we transferred him to the ambulance, he was still alive.” On the blood-stained road next to him was the helmet belonging to Pavitharan.

A senior police official said, “He was taken to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.”
The police said that no foul play is suspected and that a complaint has been filed under the IPC’s sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public route) and 304 A (causing death by carelessness).

The PWD of the Delhi government stated: “The disaster did not happen as a result of a water leak within the tunnel. We immediately notified the police when the disaster happened since the tunnel is continuously digitally monitored,” a PWD officer said.
According to recent claims, the PWD has begun repairs in the tunnel, mostly to fix leaks in the water supply.

Authorities claim that the leaking issue has mostly been fixed and that the tunnel is now safer. PWD had already sent the building business a court notice, accusing them of “faulty design.”.

A 19-year-old motorcyclist was involved in an accident in the Pragati Maidan tunnel only a year ago, on May 24, when he unintentionally went into crash barriers and tumbled over to the opposite side. The kid lost his life because of inadequate signal delays in the 1.3-kilometer tunnel, which prevented him from obtaining medical care in a timely manner.
