BRICS Disapproves of ‘Double Standards’ in Terrorism Countermeasures

On Thursday, the BRICS countries renounced “double standards” in the fight against terrorism and pledged to do all in their power to stop the threat, including cross-border terrorist movement and terror funding networks.

The leaders of the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—called for the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism to be finalized and adopted quickly within the framework of the UN, according to a statement released at the conclusion of the three-day summit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva all participated in the meeting, which was presided over by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, participated by video conference.

In the statement, it was said that “we are committed to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including the cross-border movement of terrorists, as well as terrorism financing networks and safe havens.”

“We reiterate that terrorism should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization, or ethnic group,” it stated.

The leaders of the BRICS nations reiterated their “unwavering commitment” to make greater contributions to international efforts to avoid and combat the danger of terrorism on the basis of respect for international law, including the UN Charter and human rights.

The UN will continue to play a pivotal and coordinating role in this area, but the statement said that the nations have the main responsibility for countering terrorism.

In order to successfully stop terrorist operations, which offer a severe danger, even in the current pandemic context, the whole world community must adopt a comprehensive and balanced strategy, the statement said.

In order to combat terrorism and extremism supportive of terrorism, it was also stated that “we reject double standards.”

The Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism should be completed and adopted as soon as possible, according to the declaration. Multilateral negotiations on an international convention to combat acts of chemical and biological terrorism should also be launched at the Conference of Disarmament.

On the basis of the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Strategy and the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Action Plan, the presidents were claimed to have praised the efforts of the BRICS Counter-Terrorism Working Group and its five subgroups.

“We vehemently condemn terrorism in all of its forms and manifestations, wherever it occurs and by whoever commits it,” they said. We are aware of the danger posed by terrorism, extremism that supports terrorism, and radicalization,” the statement said.

The proclamation concluded, “We look forward to further deepening counter-terrorism cooperation.”
