Dalit community betrayer Charanjit Channi is now atoning for his transgressions: MLA Vikramjit Chaudhary from Phillaur

Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary, the Phillaur MLA, told The Tribune over the phone on Thursday night that former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s pilgrimages to deras and eidgahs, among other places, are his means of atoning for his transgressions. He said that he made a number of mistakes that are still bothering him during his time as CM and minister.

He claimed that while Channi is now supporting the Dalit community, during his tenure as the Chief Minister, he had deceived the people.

“The fraud involving the distribution of scholarships to the SC community is well known to everybody. Crores of rupees were unlawfully given to several private colleges. Channi held an emergency cabinet meeting and opted not to file a formal complaint or begin an investigation, instead of filing a police report. Chaudhary said, “Channi betrayed the poor and Dalit students who needed those scholarships to pursue higher education by putting his seal of approval on this serious scam.”

He added that a woman IAS officer had accused Channi of harassing him by sending offensive texts when Channi was the Minister of Technical Education and Industrial Training. He lost the Vidhan Sabha elections in not one, but two seats as a result of the many skeletons in his closet. The people would teach him the same lesson even today, he continued, no matter where in Punjab he runs for office, even in Jalandhar, the center of the Dalit population.
