First, Alappuzha swelters under the possibility of a heatwave

Alappuzha is now in danger of experiencing a heatwave similar to those that have recently affected the districts of Palakkad and Thrissur.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an advisory for a heatwave and warm night for Alappuzha, the first of its kind in the region. The advisory states that uncomfortably high temperatures are predicted to persist throughout the day and at night.

This summer, Alappuzha has seen a considerable rise in temperature; on Tuesday, the city recorded 37.1°C. On Monday, the temperature reached a record-breaking 38.3°C, setting a new record for April.

The heatwave advisory is based in part on Alappuzha’s high relative humidity. Alappuzha just needs 37°C with a departure of 4.5°C to be considered for the warning, although other districts have a criterion of 40°C,” said meteorologist Rajeevan Erikkulam of the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority.

One of the main causes of this year’s temperature increase is the spike in sea surface temperature that is linked to El Nino. In addition, the lack of summer rains and modifications to the local land conditions made the weather worse,” he said.

Tuesday’s warm night notice in Alappuzha was issued by IMD due to the lowest temperature’s extraordinary departure of over 4°Celsius.

A heatwave warning was issued by the Met department on Tuesday, May 2, for Palakkad, Thrissur, and Kozhikode, in addition to Alappuzha.

IMD issued yellow warnings in the other three districts while extending the orange alert in Palakkad. It is expected that Palakkad would see a high temperature of 41°C.

During that time, the highest temperature that Thrissur is expected to record is 40°C, Kozhikode 39°C, and Alappuzha 38°C. Palakkad defied the previous four days’ pattern by narrowly avoiding the scorching situation. The district recorded 40.4°C, which is 4.4°C more than the daily average. Thrissur, Kozhikode, Alappuzha, and Thiruvananthapuram all had 3-3.5°C over average temperatures. Numerous locations in the southern districts saw rain, while a few isolated areas saw thunderstorms.
