Hyderabad’s thirst may soon be satisfied with 100 MLD of water from Mallannasagar

In the event that the levels of water in the Godavari Drinking Water Supply Project Scheme’s Yellampally Reservoir diminish, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is preparing to draw 100 MLD of water from the Mallanna Sagar Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in the Siddipet district to the Intermediate Reservoir and Pump House at Kondapaka sump in Siddipet through the installation of a 290-meter pipeline.

At present, Yellampally (Godavari system) provides 163 million gallons of water per day (MGD) to the HMWSSB. Mission Bhagiratha receives about 32 MGD of this water. Owing to unfinished Mission Bhagiratha pipeline construction, the Water Board is compelled to provide water to MB segments. Currently, the Mission Bhagiratha segments in Gajwel, Alair, Bhongir, and Medchal are receiving 150 MLD of water from the Board.

The Water Board anticipates that the water level in the Yellampally reservoir may drop in a few weeks, which would mean decreased water removal from Yellampally for the next two to three months, according to HMWS&SB officials who spoke with TNIE. The Board has thus designed arrangements to use 100 MLD water from Mallannasagar reservoir as a precaution.

RWS is now using around 170 MLD of the 270 MLD WTP plant in Mallannasagar, according to them, which is their maximum drawing capability. As long as 100 MLD of water remains, the HMWSSB intends to use it to replace the 32 MGD of water supplied by the Water Board as part of Mission Bhagiratha. The RWS department has approved the HMWS&SB’s plan to install 290 meters of 1,000 mm diameter pipes from Mallanna Sagar WTP to Kondapaka.

The Water Board network that provides drinkable water from Yellampally to Hyderabad is connected to an intermediate pump house at Kondapaka. In order to extract drinkable water from the Mallannasagar project, the water grid officials have also built a pump house.
