Jorhat Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Topon Kumar Gogoi of the BJP will battle Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress

Lok Sabha elections 2024: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and BJP candidate Topon Kumar Gogoi will face off in the Jorhat Lok Sabha seat. Gaurav moved to the Jorhat constituency as a result of the delimitation process, which resulted in the dissolution of his current MP seat in Kaliabor. From that constituency, he has won the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and 2019. The Congress, which has fielded 12 of the 14 candidates in Assam, released his name on the list of contenders. Gaurav will face Topon Kumar Gogoi of the BJP.

This is Assam’s first election after the Election Commission of India’s delimitation procedure last year, which sparked criticism from the opposition, who said the process was carried out to support the BJP, which is now in power.

The state now has nine members of the Lok Sabha from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but its allies, the AGP and UPPL, are not represented. Three seats are held by the Congress, one by the AIUDF, and one by an independent candidate.

Seat in Jorhat Lok Sabha
In the 2019 election, 77.2 percent of voters cast ballots in Jorhat. Ten Assembly segments make up the constituency for the Lok Sabha as well.

With more than 50% of the vote, the BJP’s Topon Gogoi won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. After counting 543,288 votes, he won.

Gaurav Gogoi is who?
The current two-term MP, Gaurav Gogoi, is a candidate for reelection in 2024. In the Lok Sabha, he serves as the party’s deputy leader. As the nation was being overtaken by the Modi wave in the 2014 general elections, Tarun Gogoi, the longest-serving chief minister of Assam, made sure his son won the Kaliabor seat.

Gaurav will be making his maiden Lok Sabha bid from the Jorhat seat, which his father formerly twice held in the legislature, after Tarun Gogoi’s passing in 2020.
