Manipur: Following the killing of a village volunteer, a 48-hour strike disrupts life in the Imphal Valley

Following the death of a village volunteer, age 23, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) called a 48-hour strike on Saturday, disrupting life in the Imphal valley of Manipur.

Leaders of the JAC’s civil society groups are organizing the strike, which is scheduled to start at five in the morning.

According to PTI, the deadly event happened on January 17 after a shootout between two rival clans in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district.

As a result, the Imphal Valley’s marketplaces, companies, and public transportation system came to a complete halt, and reports of low attendance in workplaces were made. Police sources state that there have been no incidents recorded yet.

The Imphal valley was hit by the strike, but the hill areas were spared.

The JAC claims the government has not responded to their memorandum on the death, which it sent to Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The committee claims in a statement that “We had sent Chief Minister N Biren Singh a memorandum about the death. Nevertheless, the administration has not responded.”

The JAC has made it clear that individuals responsible for the village volunteer’s death must be taken into custody right now. The strike highlights the seriousness of the matter and the committee’s efforts to hold people accountable and to bring about justice in the wake of the catastrophe.
