Muslim Student Slapped in Muzaffarnagar: The Supreme Court Requests a Report on the Status of the Investigation and Notifies The UP Government

The Supreme Court today ordered the superintendent of Muzaffarnagar police to file a report on the status of the investigation and steps taken to protect the victim and parents, days after a video surfaced showing a Muslim student being slapped by his fellow students in UP’s Muzaffarnagar on the orders of a teacher. The UP government has also received a notice from the court instructing it to submit a response by September 25.

Tushar Gandhi filed a plea on behalf of the 7-year-old kid from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, requesting an independent inquiry and the filing of a formal complaint (FIR) in relation to all clauses where the prima facie case for an offense has been established.

The private school, Neha Public School, has been closed, and the National Commission for the Protection of Children’s Rights has requested that Tripta Tyagi, the concerned instructor, be the subject of a formal complaint with the Uttar Pradesh Police. She has been charged with violating Indian Penal Code Sections 323 (causing harm) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to instigate disturbance of peace).

She hasn’t yet been taken into custody, however.

The petitioner’s attorney also asked for instructions on preventative and corrective actions to be taken in educational systems to stop violence against children, particularly those who are members of religious minorities. The petitioner further claimed that since the FIR was lodged against the instructor, the child’s family has been under increasing pressure to reach a “compromise” and have the FIR dismissed.
