Police should detain Shajahan Sheikh, the Calcutta High Court orders

The state’s governing party said that it does not defend offenders and that TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh will be arrested within seven days after the Calcutta High Court on Monday ordered the police to arrest him. Sheikh is accused of sexual atrocities and land grabs in Sandeshkhali.

A Division Bench led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam brought up the Mamata Banerjee administration in the state, stating that it was unexpected that “it has taken four years for 42 cases” to develop into chargesheets.

In the suo motu case, which was started in response to claims of sexual abuse of women and the appropriation of tribal lands, the court ordered that Sheikh, the ED, the CBI, the Superintendent of Police, and the state’s Home Secretary, who represented the West Bengal government, be entered as parties.
