Prior to a decision about bypass surgery, Minister Senthil Balaji is undergoing further testing at Kauvery Hospital

The authorities at Kauvery Main Hospital said on Friday that V Senthil Balaji, the minister of Tamil Nadu’s electricity who was detained by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday in connection with an alleged money laundering case, was receiving treatment in the ICU with cardiac monitoring.

The minister was moved from a government institution to the Kauvery Main Hospital on Thursday after a court order for relief.

Senthil was examined by a group of doctors led by A R Raghuram, Senior Consultant Cardio Thoracic Surgeon, who has recommended early Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) surgery, according to the medical bulletin released by Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, co-founder and Executive Director, Kauvery Group of Hospitals.

“He is undergoing additional testing to determine his anaesthesia readiness, and based on the assessment, the surgery will be planned,” the statement said.

A multidisciplinary team of physicians and nurses are presently caring for Balaji as he is receiving treatment in the ICU with cardiac monitoring, it was said.

When he was the Transport Minister in the J Jayalalithaa-led government at the time, Balaji was detained by the ED in connection with a cash-for-jobs scandal that reportedly included him.
