Six years were served as Sanjay Nirupam’s expulsion from Congress for “indiscipline, anti-party statements.”

For his indiscipline and anti-party remarks, Congress has dismissed Sanjay Nirupam, a leader of Maharashtra, for a period of six years. The Congress unit in Maharashtra took disciplinary action against him for comments he made recently criticizing Shiv Sena (UBT), a party ally and member of the Maha Vikas Aghadi in the state.

“Taking note of complaints of indiscipline and anti-party statements, Congress president (Mallikarjun Kharge) has approved the expulsion of Sanjay Nirupam from the party for six years with immediate effect,” according to a party message.

Nirupam, a former MP, is no longer listed by the Congress as a prominent campaigner. Following Nirupam’s criticism of the state government for “ceding” Mumbai seats to the Shiv Sena, headed by Uddhav Thackeray, during seat-sharing negotiations for the Lok Sabha elections, calls for action against the politician intensified.

State party president Nana Patole told reporters following a meeting of the party’s campaign committee in Mumbai, “The Congress has dropped Nirupam’s name from the list of star campaigners and disciplinary action has been initiated against him for his utterances against the party and the state unit leadership.”

Nirupam brought up the “serious financial crisis” in Congress, seemingly referencing the Income Tax Department’s move about tax demand, while making fun of the party’s behavior. “Congress is facing a severe financial crisis, therefore it should use its might to rescue itself. I had given the party till today to finish up. In a post on X, he said, “Tomorrow, I will lay out my next course of action.”

Following the announcement of the Shiv Sena’s (UBT) candidates for four of the six Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai, including the Mumbai North West seat that Nirupam was said to be vying for, the former MP from Mumbai North, Nirupam, took aim at the state leadership of the Congress.

Additionally, he has said that the Congress leadership must resist giving in to pressure from the Shiv Sena (UBT). The previous president of the Mumbai Congress had said that to accept the Shiv Sena (UBT) decision to unilaterally field candidates in Mumbai would be to allow the Congress to be destroyed.
