Summer rains in the Nilgiris and Anamalai Tiger Reserve reduce the risk of wildfires

Summer rains in the Nilgiris forest division and the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) in the Coimbatore district have reduced the risk of more wildfires. Following a brief period of rain in regions vulnerable to forest fires, forest officials here exhaled with relief.

On Tuesday, summer rain was observed in urban locations like Charring Cross, as well as in Doddabetta, Ebbanad, and the eighth mile of the Ooty-Gudalur route.
In the last two months, three forest fires have been recorded in the Ebbanad forest due to high temperatures. According to reports, Tuesday’s unexpected rain has lessened the likelihood of a flare-up, even if just a few hectares of the trees were killed here.

A popular tourist destination close to Sandynalla and Ooty town is the 8th mile. But there was no rain in the districts of Glenmorgan and Pykara.
The short bout of rain was welcomed by the people of Ooty hill town, as it provided relief from the heat of the lowlands throughout the day. Because to El Nino, the vacation town has seen extremely high temperatures during the last two months.
Nilgiri Environment Social Trust (NEST) member V Sivadas said, “We are very content and relished the rain.” It was supposed to rain in the middle of March. But the El Nino influence meant that the summer rains came later than expected. In Ooty town, midday temperatures are typically chilly. But we were seeing heatwaves this summer, similar to those on the plains. Given that the sky is gloomy on Wednesday, we anticipate further rainfall of this kind, which will greatly relieve the population.

Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) woodland sections are still dry, which suggests a significant risk of forest fire. The MTR Field Director, D Venkatesh, acknowledged that summer rains will put out forest fires. In a few other instances, wild creatures will also profit.
On Monday, rain was observed in the Valparai area, close to the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR). According to reports, there was a one-and-a-half-hour drizzle in Akka Malai Grass Hills, Sirukundra, Kadambarai, and Chinnakallar, and there was intense rain near the Valparai town municipal boundaries.
