Temperatures in Kolkata are expected to stay above 40 degrees during the longest heatwave of the century

Kolkata: The capital of West Bengal, Kolkata, is experiencing the longest heatwave in the city’s history as a result of persistent temperatures that have consistently risen beyond 40 degrees Celsius. Today is the sixth day this month with temperatures so high that they are over 40 degrees Celsius, according to meteorological statistics, since the heatwave began on April 19.

The Regional Meteorological Centre’s (RMC) chief, Somenath Dutta, says there won’t be any relief in sight since scorching conditions are predicted to last until at least May 2 and no rain is forecast till May 5. According to a TOI article, Dutta also mentioned the chance of a rainstorm on May 5 or 6, which would provide some respite from the oppressive heat.

Kolkata Weekly Weather Prediction
With highs between 29 and 42 degrees Celsius, Kolkata is expected to have sweltering weather from April 29 to May 2. There has been a heatwave that has persisted over this time, with temperatures often rising beyond 40 degrees Celsius. The heatwave lasts for the duration of this period, with no sign of relief despite the high temperatures. It is recommended that residents take the appropriate safety measures to remain hydrated and cool during the intense heat.

According to Dutta, “if the trend continues, observations in the Bay of Bengal show a potential for thunderstorm activity, which could bring down temperatures.” During this time, a developed thunderstorm may bring in cool, dry air that would break up the extended warmth.”

With last Thursday’s temperature of 41.6 degrees Celsius, the highest April temperature in 44 years, the current heat wave has already surpassed records. Three days this month alone have seen temperatures rise beyond 41 degrees Celsius.

Dutta also discussed the influence of chilly southerly breezes from the Bay of Bengal, which have prevented additional temperature increases even if they are not strong enough to cause thunderstorms. He believes that throughout the course of the next several days, temperatures will probably stay steady rather than drastically rising.

Monday is expected to be sunny with some cloud cover in the afternoon, with highs and lows of around 41 and 29 degrees Celsius, respectively.
