3rd T20I between England and New Zealand: Finn Allen and Glenn Phillips Help New Zealand Destroy England by 74 Runs

In order to keep their dreams of a split series alive, New Zealand outplayed England and won the third Twenty20 international at Edgbaston on Sunday by a dominant 74 runs.

In New Zealand’s 202-5, Glenn Phillips scored 69 and Finn Allen made 83.

As England crumbled to 128 all out in 19 overs, New Zealand skipper Tim Southee (2-30), recalled paceman Kyle Jamieson (3-23), and spinner Ish Sodhi (3-33) inflicted the most of the damage.

Only four players scored in double figures during the T20 world champions’ innings, with Moeen Ali scoring 26 and Jos Buttler leading the pace with 40 for England.

Prior to Tuesday’s conclusion in Nottingham, England now has a 2-1 advantage in the four-match series.

During an 88-run third-wicket partnership, Allen and Phillips, who both played for Southern Brave in English domestic cricket’s The Hundred, hit leg-spinner Adil Rashid for three consecutive sixes.

Gus Atkinson, who had just made his T20 debut on Friday at Old Trafford and impressed with four wickets in a 95-run victory, was the star of the attack with figures of 2-31.

However, Liam Livingstone, a spinner, was dismissed for 55 in four overs.

Devon Conway was run out in the fourth over after Southee won the toss.

Allen, the opening partner, countered with a quick innings that lasted just 53 balls.

Highlights were a drive over deep extra cover, a legside slog, and a lofted shot down the ground to get him to 77, all within the 15th over, when he blasted the seasoned Rashis for three consecutive sixes.

When Wood’s inswinging yorker dismissed him to conclude a 53-ball innings, he was within striking distance of a second T20 century.

In the 19th over, Atkinson claimed two wickets, first dismissing Daryl Mitchell and then Phillips with a slower ball.

As Southee removed Dawid Malan for a laborious two off 11 balls, Jamieson removed Will Jacks for 11 runs.

Harry Brook, who was unpopularly left out of the original England team for the 50-over World Cup, got things started with a four but fell for eight when he holed out off Sodhi, who had previously removed Jonny Bairstow.

While Buttler temporarily gave his team hope of an unlikely victory, England were now 55-4, and his 21-ball innings came to an end when he was caught and bowled by spinner Mitchell Santner.

With his dismissal of Moeen, Jamieson struck again in the 16th over, leaving England all but defeated at 113-9.
