Adam Gilchrist criticises Rishabh Pant for his umpire disagreement, saying “He should get fined.”

NEW DELHI: Adam Gilchrist, a former Australian cricket player, took issue with Rishabh Pant’s lengthy conversation with the on-field umpire during the Lucknow Super Giants vs. Delhi Capitals IPL 2024 match.

Gilchrist pushed for quicker fixes to avoid interfering with play and stressed the need for umpires to exercise control over such circumstances.

Gilchrist told Cricbuzz, “I saw another instance tonight that underscores the necessity for umpires to have more control over games, regardless of the format.

They just need to advance things more effectively.”
He emphasised that umpire-player contacts should be straightforward, saying, “It’s a very simple conversation, I believe.” Umpires should just declare, “It’s finished,” and go on, regardless of how much Rishabh or any other player complains.”

Gilchrist, who was irritated by the drawn-out debate, proposed fines for players who go on with pointless chats. He said, “But if he keeps talking, he should get fined.”
The incident happened in the fourth over of Lucknow’s innings, when Delhi had failed to review a wide ball, and Pant got into a long argument with him. After some disagreement among commentators, it was explained that Pant was unhappy because Padikkal’s bat passage did not include the use of a snickometer to detect an outside edge.
Pant overcame the distraction to demonstrate his batting skills with a quick 41 off 24 balls, helping the Delhi Capitals win their second IPL 2024 match. His performance demonstrated his tenacity and helped Delhi have a successful tournament campaign.
