Captain Dasun Shanaka will miss the 2023 Cricket World Cup for Sri Lanka due to an injury

Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka’s captain, was ruled out of the World Cup on Saturday due to a right thigh muscle injury, dealing a serious blow to the country’s sputtering World Cup campaign. The ICC claimed in a statement that Shanaka sustained the injury during their encounter against Pakistan on October 10 and that he would need at least three weeks to heal, prompting the Lankans to look for a replacement.

Chamika Karunaratne has been accepted as Shanaka’s replacement by the ICC Event Technical Committee.

In the tournament, Sri Lanka’s first two games were losses against South Africa and Pakistan.

In their pursuit of an intimidating 429 against South Africa in New Delhi, the 32-year-old Shanaka scored 68 runs off 62 balls.

Karunaratne has participated in 23 ODIs for the Islanders as a middle-order hitter and right-arm medium bowler.

The 27-year-old has played in 23 games, taken 24 wickets, and amassed 443 runs, including a fifty.
