Poland Moves Easily Against China to Advance to the United Cup Semi-Finals

Hubert Hurkacz and Iga Swiatek won their singles bouts in Perth, while Poland defeated China 2-0 on Wednesday to advance to the United Cup mixed team semifinals.

Big-hitting Hurkacz easily defeated Zhang Zhizhen 6-3 6-4 to open the $10 million tournament for the top-seeded country out of the eighteen countries.

Afterwards, Swiatek overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first set to defeat Zheng Qinwen 6-2 6-3 and win the tournament three times in a row. The world number one is utilizing this event to get ready for the Australian Open this month.

Now, Poland will go to Sydney to play in the semifinals. Australia or Serbia, who square off in the second quarterfinal match of the day in Perth, will accompany them.

The top-seeded Novak Djokovic will play Alex de Minaur in the first singles round. Djokovic was hindered by a wrist problem during Serbia’s victory against the Czech Republic on Tuesday.

France defeated Italy 2-0 to go to the quarterfinals with to goals from Caroline Garcia and Adrian Mannarino. The world no. 20 Garcia defeated Jasmine Paolini 6-4 5-7 6-4, after Mannarino’s 6-4 6-4 victory against Lorenzo Sonego in the Group D match.

Later on Wednesday, Australia Open runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas is slated to play his first singles match of the season against Greece in Group B.

The Australian Open is scheduled for January 14–28.
