Syazrul Idrus of Malaysia is the first bowler to capture seven wickets in a men’s Twenty20 match

Syazrul Idrus, a seamer from Malaysia, set a rare milestone when he became the first male player to take seven wickets in a T20 international match. As a result of his outstanding performance against China in the T20 World Cup 2024 Asia Regional Qualifier B at Bayuemas Oval in Kaula Lumpur, his team was able to win by an eight-wicket margin.

For his outstanding effort in the encounter, the 32-year-old also won Player of the encounter. Out of a total of 24 balls, he bowled 20 dot balls. Idrus constantly swung the ball into the hitters, resulting in all seven of his wickets. Peter Aho’s record for the greatest bowling statistics in a men’s T20I match was broken by the pacer. Aho has a 6 for 5 record when representing Nigeria versus Sierra Leone in 2021.

Notably, a total of 12 bowlers — including the Indian duo of Deepak Chahar and Yuzvendra Chahal, Australian spinner Ashton Agar, and Sri Lankan tweener Ajantha Mendis — had previously claimed six-wicket hauls in a Men’s T20I, but an elusive seven-wicket haul had never been documented until Idrus’ amazing effort.

As a result of Idrus’ incredible bowling performance, Malaysia easily defeated China.

The right-armer, who grabbed all seven of his wickets bowled when the visitors were out for only 23 in the 12th over, took a like to the Pandamaran conditions and single-handedly ripped through the Chinese batting order.

As they chased down the winning mark in the fifth over of their reply, Malaysia lost two fast wickets, giving them the ideal start to the qualification event they are hosting before the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies next year.

The winner of this competition advances to the Asia Regional Final, which will be held in Nepal in November, and the top two teams from that competition advance to the 20-over showcase in 2024.

Syazrul Idrus, who is he?
When he played his first T20I against Vanuatu in Kaula Lumpur in 2019, the pacer made his international debut for Malaysia. He has played 23 T20I matches for the associate country over the course of his four-year career, taking 47 wickets at an outstanding average of 11.34.
