“We have the opportunity to become heroes,” Shoaib Bashir said of the possibility of ruining India’s pursuit in Ranchi

At the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, on day four of the current 4th Test, England’s youthful off-spinner Shoaib Bashir is sure he will ruin India’s run chase.
While acknowledging that the English spinners have a difficult assignment ahead of them, Bashir, who amassed a five-for (5/119) in the first innings and was instrumental in guaranteeing a 46-run advantage for the visitors, remains optimistic about outplaying the hosts.

“Ten opportunities to take ten wickets, and on that wicket anything is possible,” Bashir said to TNT.

“Tommy and I are eager to take on the task. We have a great deal of confidence after seeing how Ashwin and (Ravindra) Jadeja bowled on that ground. When I was a little younger, I used to watch these guys, and they are amazing spinners. We both know we’re up against a top-notch offense, but we still have a chance to win,” he said.

After taking his first five wicket haul in the red-ball format, Bashir was visibly upset and dedicated it to his two late grandfathers, who were ardent supporters of the game’s longest version.

I would want to dedicate this to my two deceased grandfathers who were both gone around a year and a half ago. They used to spend all their time watching Test cricket on TV while lounging on the sofa in front of the screen. And they wanted to see me perform, but that didn’t work out. Thus, yes, it was really emotional, but I’m appreciative,” he said.

The 20-year-old officine player expressed his excitement at joining the English Test team and praised captain Ben Stokes and his team for helping the younger players feel accepted and like they belong.

“These are the folks I used to see when I was younger. You get so much confidence from them just being in that dressing room. Even if they have to bat first, Ben Stokes and the boys are outstanding. It’s simply a great group to be a part of, and it just brings out the best in you,” he said in closing.
