“Never Seen This Side of UP Police”: Jalaun Police Set Up Criminal’s Daughter’s Wedding After Encounter

When a group of police in Uttar Pradesh (UP) planned the wedding of a young lady whose criminal father they had slain in an encounter, they showed kindness and altruism. They not only made arrangements for the location, cuisine, and treats, but they also covered the cost of the home items, jewelry, and motorbike that were presented to the bride as a gift and warmly greeted the Baratis.

The mother of the bride remarked that she had never imagined marrying off her daughter in such a lavish manner and that she will always be grateful to the UP Police for saving the family.

Constable Bhedjit Singh was brutally killed on May 10, 2023, about a year ago. He was assigned to the Kotwali Police area in the Orai region of Uttar Pradesh. But four days after the event, Ramesh Raikwar and Kallu Ahirwar, the two major culprits, were neutralized by Jalaun Police after a confrontation in the nearby Jalaun district.

However, the narrative did not finish there. We were all touched to learn that the family of deceased criminal Ramesh Raikwar was living in abject poverty. They had two daughters to marry off, very little at home, and no working hands. We then promised the family that we would assist them in any way. In addition, we assured the deceased criminal’s spouse that they would cover all costs associated with the two daughters’ marriages,” said Girija Shankar Tripathi, a circle officer (CO) on the Jalaun police encounter squad.

When Ramesh’s widow Tara recently contacted Tripathi, she told him that her daughter Shivani’s marriage had been arranged in the Jhansi area, at which point the Jalaun police began organizing the nuptials. “Thereafter, we organized the nuptials. We raised money together, solicited assistance from the public, reserved a location, ordered household gifts—such as a bike and other items—and also planned for the food, drinks, and jewelry, according to the CO.

This unique wedding took place on March 2 at Orai’s Janki Palace, where police from the nearby district (Jalaun) not only welcomed the Baratis but also showered blessings on the newlyweds. “I’ve never seen the UP police in this light. As we lived in abject poverty and had two children to marry off, I also considered taking my own life when my husband was slain in a confrontation with Jalaun police. It was like coming to a standstill. But we are grateful to the Jalaun police, who supported and assisted us the whole time. In addition to providing the family with financial support, the police promised to assist with every aspect of planning my daughter’s wedding. And they kept their word today,” Tara Raikwar, Ramesh Raikwar’s wife, said.

The bride, Shivani Raikwar, said that her father was not missed during the nuptials. She expressed her gratitude to the UP police for providing her with such life-long memories. “I never imagined that I would also have such priceless memories to treasure for the rest of my life,” the woman said.

The Jalaun police executed two notorious criminals on May 14, 2023, after an altercation in which they were charged with the murder of a police constable, according to Aseem Chaudhary, auxiliary superintendent of police (ASP), Jalaun. “After meeting with the Jalaun police, the relatives of one of the culprits, Ramesh, said that while Ramesh had received his just desserts, the question remained as to who would marry off the two girls. Upon seeing the family’s pathetic condition, the Jalaun police promised to assist them in whatever way they could and also instructed them to start making plans for the daughter’s wedding,” he said.
