The fifth month of the Hindu lunar calendar, “Sawan,” also known as “Shravan,” is one of the most sacred months of the year. During this season, every Monday is considered as a particularly auspicious day to fast and ask Lord Shiva’s blessings.

2023’s Kanwar Yatra

The Kanwar Yatra is a major ceremony that occurs at this time as well. For this ritual, people collect water from holy rivers and pour it into little mud pots called Kanwars. In order to visit Lord Shiva temples, devotees dress in saffron and go on foot while carrying sacred water. Kanwariyas, or devotees, go to locations like Haridwar, Gaumukh, and Gangotri in Uttarakhand, as well as Sultanganj in Bihar, to collect the sacred River Ganga water for devotion.

The fifth month in the Hindu lunar calendar is called Sawan. The devotion of Lord Shiva is the focus of this blessed month. This year, rather than the customary one month, the Shravan season lasts for two months. Previously, some 19 years ago, there was a Shravan era that lasted about two months. This year’s first fasting Monday occurs on July 10; the last fasting Monday occurs on August 28.

Every three years, as the Sun changes signs or transits from one sign to another, a new month is added to the Hindu calendar. Sankranti is another name for this transit. As a consequence, a solar year has 12 Sankranti, and the month without a Sankranti is known as Malmas or Adhikmas. Normally, no new or auspicious ceremonies or chores are carried out during this month. This year, Malmas will last from July 18, 2023, through August 16, 2023.

This year, Sawan will run 58 days, starting on July 4 and ending on August 31.
