Elon Musk Creates ‘XAI’ AI Startup to Compete with OpenAI, Maker of ChatGPT

Elon Musk unveiled a team of engineers from the same major American technology corporations on Wednesday when he officially launched his long-teased artificial intelligence company xAI. Musk aims to compete with these companies by developing an alternative to ChatGPT. Musk, the owner of Twitter and CEO of Tesla, will serve as the startup’s CEO. Musk has previously said that regulation is necessary for the AI industry and that the field’s progress should be put on hold.

“Announcing formation of @xAI to understand reality,” Musk said in a tweet on Wednesday. On July 14, xAI will host a Twitter Spaces event, according to the website. Igor Babuschkin, a former engineer at DeepMind, Tony Wu, a former Google research scientist, Christian Szegedy, a former Microsoft employee, and Greg Yang make up the xAI team.

According to a state filing, Musk registered X.AI Corp, a Nevada-incorporated company, in March. Musk is listed as the company’s only director while Jared Birchall, the family office’s managing director, is listed as the secretary.

The entrepreneur had previously said in April that he will introduce TruthGPT, or a maximal truth-seeking AI, to compete with Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing AI, both of which aim to comprehend the essence of the cosmos.

Prior to the introduction of Bard and Bing AI, OpenAI’s debut of the well-known chatbot ChatGPT in November of last year brought generative AI to the public’s attention.

The xAI team will get advice from Dan Hendrycks, who is the head of the Center for AI Safety and whose work focuses on the dangers of AI. According to the website, Musk’s new business is independent of X Corp but will collaborate closely with Twitter, Tesla, and other businesses.
