A Rs 7,593-crore smart metering project in Uttar Pradesh has been awarded to GMR Power and Urban Infra Limited’s (GPUIL) subsidiary GMR Smart Electricity Distribution Company, the company said on Monday.

The project has been funded by the Indian government’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) program.

A major order for Rs 7,593 crore has been given to subsidiary GMR Smart Electricity Distribution Pvt. Ltd. It is the largest combined package order of its kind. The order was placed using the DBFOOT (Design, Build, Finance, Own, Operate, and Transfer) model and involves 75.69 lakh prepaid smart meters across two discoms, Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (DVVNL) and Purvanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (PuVVNL).

The project would encompass 22 districts, including well-known cities like Varanasi, Prayagraj, Agra, Mathura, and Aligarh.

“These wins underscore GMR’s commitment to pivot into green and technology-based energy business with customer-centric growth strategy,” stated Srinivas Bommidala, Chairman – Energy, GMR Group. With this mandate, GMR group enters the power industry’s B2C market on a significant scale and adds value for GPUIL shareholders. We see this as a promising start for our Energy 2.0 strategy of emerging commercial opportunities in the power industry and have plans for other projects in this area.

The design, supply, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of prepaid smart meter infrastructure covering customer homes as well as at the network level, including distribution transformers and feeders, are all included in the project’s scope. This infrastructure will be in place for a total of 10 years.

The GMR Group includes GMR Power and Urban Infra Limited (GPUIL). It has knowledge of the transportation, urban infrastructure, and energy industries.
