With gifts of Rs 960000000 in 2023, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was ranked second on the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023. Kiran, 70, mostly made donations to science, research, and education. While Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is well-known as a prosperous Indian entrepreneur, not many people are aware of her extraordinary journey from impoverished beginnings to billionaire status. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, who was born in 1953, attended Bishop Cotton Girl’s High School in Bangalore before attending Bangalore University to study biology and zoology, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in the subject. She had aspirations of becoming a doctor, but she was unable to realize them since he was unable to get a scholarship. Later, she attended Melbourne University in Australia to study malting and brewing, and in 1975, she graduated as a master brewer.

In 1978, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw founded Biocon after arriving back in India. She used a little garage and barely Rs 10,000 to start the business. In order to fund its operations, Biocon extracted papain, an enzyme found in papayas. It should be mentioned that beef tenderization involves the use of papain. In order to clarify beer, Biocon has entered the isinglass extraction industry. Within a year, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw had success, and Biocon was the first business to effectively sell these enzymes to the US and a number of European countries. At now, Biocon’s market capitalization exceeds Rs 347000000000. According to Forbes, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has an estimated net worth of Rs 23247 crore.
