What We Know: Microsoft Is Developing Smaller AI Models To Take Advantage of More Opportunities

Microsoft is purportedly developing smaller, less expensive artificial intelligence (AI) models in an effort to take advantage of new AI industry prospects. According to The Information, the newly formed generative AI team will concentrate on creating smaller language models (SLMs), which are computationally less demanding than larger language models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s GPT-4.

The article said, “Microsoft is doubling down on artificial intelligence that is smaller and less expensive to run than OpenAI’s.”

According to the story, which cited sources, the tech giant has established a new team to build conversational AI that uses less processing power than the software it now uses from OpenAI.

Microsoft corporate vice president Misha Bilenko is expected to lead the new GenAI team, which will be a part of the Azure cloud division.

Additionally, the business transferred a number of top AI developers from its research team to the GenAI team. In the meanwhile, OpenAI last month introduced the GPT Store, allowing customers on its premium subscriptions to exchange and trade bespoke AI models created using the company’s LLMs.

Users who are enrolled in one of OpenAI’s premium ChatGPT plans—ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Enterprise, or the recently introduced ChatGPT Team—must have access to the GPT Store.

In addition, the Sam Altman-led business said that it would begin a revenue-sharing scheme with GPT developers in the next first quarter. The cost of ChatGPT Team is $25 per month for yearly billing or $30 per month for monthly payment, per user.

A number of capabilities present in ChatGPT Enterprise are available in ChatGPT Team, which is designed for teams with little more than 150 members. These features include the ability to construct custom GPTs and access to GPT-4 and DALL-E 3.
