A riot of laughter

We have all fantasized of going to Goa on at least one occasion with an all-girl/boy group. Call it an aspirational post-“Dil Chahta Hai.” That dream has been realized by writer-director Kunal Kemmu, who has engrossed it in an overly dramatic fictitious tale about three friends: Dodo, Pinku, and Ayush. They had many plans to go to Goa while in school and college, but they were never able to make it. When they do eventually arrive at the seaside city as adults, they find themselves enmeshed in a web of drugs, criminals, and law enforcement, making it impossible for them to go.

Pratik Gandhi, who portrays Pinku, is the most skilled actor of the three. Pinku is a “fattu” who, after accidently using cocaine twice, transforms into a fearless, resolute macho guy. His actions provide a lot of humorous scenes. Until the very end, Divyendu’s (Dodo) comedic skills hold both his performance and the movie together. The glam factor is supplied by Avinash Tiwary, who portrays Ayush Gupta, and Nora Fatehi. Doctor Danny, played by Remo D’Souza, is the unexpected gem.

The friendship between the three buddies and the chemistry between veteran actors Chhaya Kadam (Kanchan Komdi) and Upendra Limaye (Mendoza) as criminals both work nicely on film. The antagonism between the husband and wife gives the story more momentum, and Chhaya’s swagger feels appropriate.

This script, a comedy-of-errors, is hilarious. Kemmu is a great writer and should be given more credit for that than for being the director of the movie. Kemmu’s debut as a filmmaker has established a new standard. It’s a terrific background music entertainment for the whole family. The film and music both ramp up at that point, thus his presence as a drug addict handing them the chemical gummies is quite symbolic. You’ll be laughing so hard you’ll pass out from the fantastic punchlines. Although it might be a little theatrical at times, this interesting film is still enjoyable.

Kemmu’s first film is a welcome change of pace in the comedy genre, and it’s definitely worth seeing with loved ones.
