Greta Gerwig claims to have known Ryan Gosling gave “Barbie” the true “Kenergy”

One of the most popular movies of 2023 thus far, Barbie is now dominating theaters on both a critical and financial level. Apart from its original conceptual approach, the movie’s main attractions was Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken.

Early on, Gosling’s casting faced harsh criticism; nevertheless, filmmaker Greta Gerwig defended the decision, claiming that Gosling had all the necessary “Kenergy” for the part.

She stated, “You know those actors you can…,” in an interview with the SmartLess podcast. I’ve always had the impression that they just “sort of feel like they know what’s funny.” She said that her choice was influenced by his appearances on “Saturday Night Live.”

She said, “And then I’m a big fan of all of his ‘SNLs’; I always thought he was great on ‘SNL’.” It’s amazing how well he sang “Guy That Just Got a Boat” on “Weekend Update.”

Gosling was in mind when Gerwig penned the Ken role, she said, “We inserted his name into the screenplay and everything… (Gosling’s name) was widely used. The studio said, “Oh, it’s wonderful that you know Ryan,” when we presented them the screenplay. ‘Oh, I don’t know Ryan,’ I said. I have no clue since I have never met Ryan.

Even while Gosling has been hailed by many as the movie’s greatest actor, his casting faced harsh criticism at first for being ‘too old’ for the position, especially for his portrayal as “Beach Ken.” Gosling, on the other hand, had shown excitement about the part and confirmed that he would play Ken.

Greta was also questioned by the New York Times about how she is handling the backlash from certain right-wing conservatives who have dubbed the movie “woke” and overly “preachy” and have threatened to burn their Barbie dolls, according to People magazine. Gerwig said, “Certainly, there’s a lot of passion.”

“My aim for the film is that it will serve as an invitation for everyone to join the celebration and let go of the things that may not be best for us as women or men. I’m hoping that if they experience some of that enthusiasm, they will feel some of the same comfort that it did for others.

Barbie is doing incredibly well, and both left and right wingers are enjoying it because of its original approach to how Barbie leaves Barbieland and explores the complexities of the real-life modern world, exploring topics like patriarchy, capitalism, unrealistic beauty standards to appear pretty, etc. Gerwig’s optimism has paid off, as the movie is doing very well.

At the moment, the movie has made $472 million worldwide.
