Mehbooba Mufti’s Car Was in a Serious Crash and Only Made a Narrow Escape

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which just won the Golden Globes, led the significant Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations on Wednesday. These categories are crucial for an Oscars victory. This year, the SAG Awards, which are chosen by Hollywood actors, are expected to see a surge in popularity due to its worldwide broadcast on Netflix – an unprecedented honor for the largest streaming platform in the world.

The film Oppenheimer, which narrates the tale of the atomic bomb designer, received nominations for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt in addition to the SAG Award’s highest honor for “outstanding performance by a cast.” After earning over $1 billion and garnering positive reviews from reviewers, Christopher Nolan’s three-hour epic is quickly emerging as the front-runner for the Academy Awards in March.
Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and the whole ensemble received nods for Barbie, the other half of the “Barbenheimer” box office hit from last summer and the highest earning movie of the year. The massively popular doll-inspired surreal comedy was nominated for best stunt performers as well. The other three acting nominations went to the biting comedy “American Fiction,” starring Jeffrey Wright, and the historical epic Killers of the Flower Moon, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio but did not get any awards. Both films have received nominations for best cast, with The Color Purple, a musical adaptation, filling out the field.

Massive – Netflix will broadcast the SAG Awards gala this year, which takes place on February 24, as the site gradually expands its live event offerings. Barbra Streisand will receive a lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild.

Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award winner Fran Drescher, president of SAG-AFTRA, lauded the winner in a statement, calling her “a colossal icon with a relentless work ethic, evolving with each stage of her remarkable journey.” Speeches at the gala next month will undoubtedly include repeated allusions to the Hollywood strikes of the previous year, when SAG-AFTRA and the writers’ organization engaged in a pitched battle with studios that resulted in the closure of the industry.

In November, a compromise was ultimately struck to put an end to the actors’ strike. Although Netflix is set to host the gala, none of its movies received nominations for the top honor of the evening. However, the streamer did get five nominations for films, including Jodie Foster and Annette Bening for Nyad and Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan for the Leonard Bernstein drama Maestro.

The Holdovers’ Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, as well as Emma Stone and co-star Willem Dafoe, were nominated in other categories. None of the four movies received nominations for best ensemble cast.

In three of the previous four years, the winner of that prize—Parasite, CODA, and Everything Everywhere All at Once—went on to win best picture at the Oscars. The majority of members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who cast Oscar ballots, are actors.

The SAG Awards also recognize television, with Succession leading the field with five nominations, followed by Ted Lasso, The Bear, and The Last of Us with four each.

DGA selections

On Wednesday, the Directors Guild of Hollywood revealed their own slate of nominees. The Directors Guild of America’s best picture shortlist of five nominations included both Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. They were joined by Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. On February 10, the DGA Awards will be presented.
