Moment of error! ‘Selenators’ react after Selena Gomez shares concert photos of Kpop band Girls’ Generation

Selena Gomez recently made a social media mistake that went viral among Kpop lovers all around the globe. The pop artist honored her fans on Valentine’s Day by posting a heartfelt message on Instagram, referring to them as her “true Valentines.” Nevertheless, the message turned out to be a jumble, which perplexed and delighted admirers.

Gomez captioned a set of images from what looked to be a concert with the hashtag “Selenators” and a sea of pink lights in the background. Although this could have seemed like a kind gesture, astute fans soon realized that the pictures were really taken from Girls’ Generation concerts—a well-known Kpop female group. Since Gomez’s fandom does not employ lightsticks like Kpop fandoms do, the error was particularly noteworthy.

For those who are not acquainted with Kpop culture, lightsticks play a significant role in the fan experience. Fans bring their own lightsticks and colors to performances in support of their favorite Kpop groups. During their concerts, Girls’ Generation creates a stunning pink sea with their signature pink lightstick.

The image that Gomez posted came from the Girls’ Generation official fan club, SONE, sometimes referred to as SNSD (So Nyeo Shi Dae). In reality, the picture was a thumbnail from a video called “Who the hell is Girls’ Generation?”

Gomez’s post only allowed a limited number of comments, but fans used social media to share their opinions. While some people thought Gomez should have done more study before tweeting, others thought the mix-up was hilarious. “We always thought the ‘S’ in SNSD stood for SoNyuhShiDae, turns out it’s SelenaShiDae,” a user said in a hilarious manner. “Selena Gomez is actually the 10th member of Girls’ Generation,” jokingly said another person.

Ultimately, the confusion caused a furor among Kpop enthusiasts, emphasizing how important it is to use caution while disseminating material pertaining to other fandoms. Fans seem to have been able to find the humor in the situation despite the misunderstanding, turning what might have been a serious mistake into a fun moment.
