After a wheel comes off during takeoff, a United Airlines aircraft makes an emergency landing

NEW DELHI: A wheel from a Boeing 777 that broke off and damaged many automobiles in a parking lot forced the 249-person aircraft to make an emergency landing on Thursday.
After being diverted to Los Angeles, the aircraft that was headed for Japan made a safe landing there.
Wheel dropping occurred shortly after the United Airlines aircraft took off from San Francisco International Airport and landed in an employee parking lot, according to a video that was circulated online.

Retired pilot John Cox described it as a maintenance problem, saying, “I don’t see any impact for Boeing as it was a United maintenance team that changed the tire.”
According to United Airlines, the Boeing 777 has six wheels on each of its main landing struts and can land safely even if one of the wheels is broken or missing.
Alan Price, a former chief pilot for Delta Air Lines, said, “In aviation, we never want to have single points of failure if they can be avoided, and this is a case in point.”
He said, “The remaining tires can handle the load just fine.”
The most recent incident occurred in January when a door-sized panel on a Boeing 737 Max 9 broke off the fuselage after the aircraft took off in Portland, Oregon. This led to a 19-day grounding of all Boeing 737 Max 9s. Boeing is now dealing with a variety of quality control concerns.
The US authorities gave Boeing 90 days last week to create a plan to address quality control issues. The FAA director said that the company had to “commit to real and profound improvements.”
