At least 45 people were killed in an accident in Kenya when a truck rammed into other cars in the country’s western region

In western Kenya, a truck struck several other cars and market vendors, killing at least 45 people, according to the police.

The disaster happened on Friday night at a spot where accidents often happen close to the Rift Valley town of Londiani, which is located around 200 kilometres (125 miles) northwest of Nairobi, the country’s capital.

Rift Valley police chief Tom Odera told The Associated Press that while officers at the site tallied 45 corpses, it was thought that additional people may still be buried in the rubble. Unknown is how many people were hurt.

It’s becoming dark and pouring now, so we won’t know the precise number of deaths for a while, Odera said.

The truck swerved off a major highway, striking multiple cars before striking pedestrians and vendors, according to witnesses who were reported by local media. Witnesses sent pictures of the completely wrecked automobile wreckages.

Rescue efforts, according to police, will go into the night.

According to the Kenya Red Cross Society, the emergency response was hampered by heavy rains and some were still stuck in smashed-up cars.
