Bus Crash in Mexico Leaves 15 Dead, 36 Hurt, Mostly Apparently Venezuelan Migrants

At least 15 people were killed and 36 were injured after an Abus transporting largely Venezuelan migrants collided with a freight truck in central Mexico on Tuesday, according to local officials.

The state of Puebla’s administration did not specify how many of the fatalities were migrants, although it is likely that the majority of those killed were bus passengers, the majority of whom were reported to be Venezuelans by the government.

On a road that leads south into the state of Oaxaca, the tragedy occurred early on Tuesday. Migrant smugglers regularly utilize this route.

Smugglers often utilize dangerous cars and drivers, pack too many migrants inside, or attempt to elude law enforcement, which makes accidents involving such vehicles prevalent in Mexico.

A vehicle carrying five Honduran migrants collided on a route on Mexico’s southern Gulf coast in July, resulting in 18 more injuries.

17 immigrants perished in February when the bus they were riding on crashed near Puebla.

Trucks and buses are commonly used by migrants to cross Mexico on their way to the U.S. border.

56 people were killed in 2021 when a truck transporting migrants collapsed on a roadway close to the southern city of Tuxtla Gutierrez.
