Hindu Temple in Karachi Demolished for Shopping Plaza, Raising Tensions in the Community

Tensions among the community have been caused by the suspected demolition and sale of a Hindu temple in Karachi, Pakistan, for a shopping mall.

The Hindu temple Mari Mata, which is situated in Soldier Bazar in Karachi, was demolished on Friday night by an unidentified builder to make room for a commercial center, as shown in a video received by reporter.

Sources claim that the site was sold for Rs 7 crore to a developer of a retail center, but the temple was destroyed in front of police officers at midnight.

Trustees and NGOs connected to the temple, according to reports, have likewise refrained from objecting to the destruction.

The Hindu gods’ statues at the Mari Mata temple were demolished in June.

The Hindu community in Karachi experienced terror and anxiety as a result of the event, according to The Express Tribune. An assault on the temple was carried out by six to eight individuals on motorbikes, according to Sanjeev, a Hindu from the Korangi district.

Mob violence has often targeted temples in Pakistan. On the banks of the Indus River at Kotri, the town of Bhong, and the Sukkur-Multan highway, dozens of temples have been demolished.

75 lakh Hindus are estimated to be present in Pakistan. However, the group claims that there are over 90 lakh Hindus in the nation. They are mostly from Sindh province and have often complained about being harassed by radicals.
