Indian Embassy in the US expresses condolences for the “unfortunate accident” at the Baltimore Bridge; Joe Biden recognises the ship’s Indian crew’s swift response

The “unfortunate accident” in Baltimore, where a cargo ship with a 22-person Indian crew collided and destroyed a significant bridge, may have resulted in six fatalities and forced the closure of one of the most significant ports in the northeastern US. The Indian Embassy in the US has expressed condolences.

The container ship struck one of the supports of the more than 2.6 km-long Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early on Tuesday morning, causing it to collapse and affecting many cars that were crossing it. Shortly before the collision, officials reported that the ship “Dali,” flying the Singaporean flag, had a “power issue” and sent out a distress call.

During a speech at the White House, US President Joe Biden said that lives were saved by the ship’s crew’s warning before the crash.

The Maryland Department of Transportation was notified by personnel on board the ship that they had lost control of their vessel.Consequently, before the bridge was damaged, local officials were able to block it from traffic, which surely saved lives, according to Biden.
