Investigations into around 1,000 ‘ghost baby’ incidents are ongoing in South Korea

As a countrywide drive to verify the well-being of more than 2,000 undocumented infants born since 2015 is underway, the number of unregistered newborn cases under police investigation in South Korea has climbed to 939, the National Office of Investigation announced on Monday.

As of July 7, police have received reports of 1,069 “ghost baby” incidents; 939 of those cases are presently the subject of investigations, according to the Office.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the most recent number represents a rise of 159 new cases under investigation since the count on July 6.

34 infant deaths have been verified out of the total instances, 19 of which showed no indication of malicious intent.

Police are looking into possible crimes involving 11 more deceased infants, including two fatalities reported in Seoul.

Police discovered criminal accusations implicating their parents in the deaths of the babies, and four additional cases were submitted to the prosecution.

According to the authorities, their main concern is locating 782 undocumented infants.

The government is running a countrywide campaign to look into the wellbeing of more than 2,000 unregistered kids, and the police have been expanding their investigation into instances of undocumented babies who have medical records of birth but no formal birth registration.
