36% of students at IIT Bombay do not get placements: Report

Amidst a turbulent labor market, apprehensions over the career opportunities for fresh graduates are prevalent, with IIT Bombay, a prestigious Indian institution, being disproportionately affected by the decline. The institution has had a difficult time finding positions for its 2024 graduating class, even with its esteemed reputation.

According to recent data, a startling 36% of the nearly 2,000 students who registered for placement assistance—or 712 individuals—are still looking for work. This is a change from the institute’s prior performance history, in which it was often regarded as one of the best placement-oriented universities in the nation.

The computer science and engineering department at IIT Bombay has always claimed a perfect placement rate of 100%. This year, however, has witnessed a departure from the usual, which is indicative of more general issues with the labor market. The placement cell representative at the institution ascribed this failure to the worldwide economic recession, noting employers’ hesitancy to commit to fixed compensation packages.

There have also been differences in wage offers; early reports suggested that several high-paying offers had been made. Subsequent adjustments, however, showed a lower number, highlighting the complexity of the labor market today.

Students are faced with difficult choices about employment offers as the placement season stretches into May 2024. Some choose to pursue other options instead of accepting the first offers. The labor market’s changing dynamics and many organizations’ inclination toward hiring local talent add to the difficulties experienced by both recruiters and students.

Stakeholders are encouraged to work together to establish strategies in response to these changes that take into account the changing demands of students as well as the realities of the labor market. IIT Bombay has been contacted for comment, but thus yet there has been no response.

Social media users have been shocked and alarmed by the revelation of placement problems at a famous university like IIT Bombay. Many have expressed worry about the seriousness of the issue.
