80-year-old Raja of Mahmudabad passes away

The Raja of Mahmudabad, also known as Mohammad Amir Mohammad Khan, died early on Wednesday after a protracted illness. He had battled for more than four decades in court to restore his throne after the government took his lands under the Enemy Property Act. He was 80.

On Wednesday night, the Raja was buried in Karbala Mahmudabad in the Uttar Pradesh district of Sitapur.

The Raja of Mahmudabad, who was born in November 1943, continued to make news because of his protracted court struggle when the government took his property in accordance with the Enemy Property Act. According to official estimates from 2006, the value of his property, which includes Butler Palace, a sizable portion of Hazratganj, Halwasiya Market, and Mahmudabad Qila (fort), was estimated to be about 50,000 crore.

The Mahmudabad estate included properties in Sitapur, Nainital, and Mahmudabad in addition to Lucknow, and its history can be traced back to the 16th century and the patronage of Emperor Akbar.

Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, expressed sorrow at Khan’s passing. The passing of Raja Mahmudabad Sir Mohammad Amir Mohammad Khan Sahab is very sad. May God provide the deceased person’s soul peace. May the family members have the fortitude to deal with this great loss at this hour of sorrow,” he wrote on X in Hindi.
